122. Aimee Mann

Aimee Mann is so distinctive: tall, thin, pretty, with blond, stringy hair, a musical psychologist, singing her mid-tempo observations of life.

I was first introduced to Ms. Mann by reading the enthisiastic review in Rolling Stone magazine of Bachelor No. 2, or The Last Remains Of The Dodo. Shortly after, I bought the soundtrack to the movie Magnolia, which shares tracks with Bachelor No. 2.

Here’s the best video I found, a beautiful rendition of “Red Vines” from Bachelor No. 2:

Another outstanding example of Aimee Mann’s work can be found on the 60 minute “Artists Den” concert, filmed in a church in Los Angeles. If you see the performance repeated on one of the artsy channels, it is worth recording. Here’s “31 (Today)” from that concert:

Unless you are a serious fan, owning Bachelor No. 2, or the better songs on that CD, is probably sufficient. The song “Save Me” from Magnolia was nominated for an Oscar in 2000. “Wise Up” from that album:

“Deathly”, one of my favorite songs:

Aimee Mann is a unique, recognizable voice in music history. The haunting melodies, the liberal use of modern slang, the wry humor, set her apart from the ordinary. The song “Deathly” is one of my all-time favorites; I can’t get over how clever and intense the emotions are. “How Am I Different?” is also wonderful. Here’s the current list for your enjoyment:

How Am I Different and Deathly are my two Amy Mann favorites as well. Interestingly, I don’t find them particularly good sing along songs other than the choruses of both songs. But they are good listening!
