Crazy, Man – Finished Rating Songs in the Collection

…and it only took four and a half years.

I started an iTunes library on December 31st, 2004, after receiving my first iPod as a Christmas present. The process of building the library is laid out in the “Methodology” page. Lately, it’s been a race to the finish line: reviewing songs, researching alternative versions of old standards, adding new discoveries, removing redundant performances and other undesirable music. At this point, hundreds, perhaps thousands of hours have been devoted. Tell you what — the collection looks strong now, covering a broad spectrum of the 20th century popular musical experience. Sometimes the most popular version of a song is chosen, more often a critically acclaimed rendition is chosen. There are so many good versions of many jazz standards — I’ll pick two or three, mix up the artists, and always select the one if one is universally recognized. For example, Lester Young burst onto the scene in 1936 with “Oh, Lady Be Good”. Even I was smart enough to recognize its greatness without being told so.

Oh, Lady Be Good, Jones-Smith Incorporated ✭✭✭✭✭
Oh, Lady Be Good, Le Quintette du Hot Club de France ✭✭

As of today:

8244 songs, with the breakdown as follows:
5-star: 97
4-star: 915
3-star: 2615
2-star: 3492
1-star: 1112
0-star: 12

Twelve songs get the coveted zero star rating. I’d rather not list the offending songs, but that part of the collection will evolve. Ordinary bad songs will merely face deletion. In the end, they will have to spectacularly bad songs. Only the worst are worthy. I’m listening to one right now….yeeeeeeeeech!

These were added since last time:

Shout! by Otis Day & The Knights is a great dance tune, a highlight in any wedding reception.
