My wife discovered this fine YouTube rendition of the recent hit song by Beyonce called “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”:
This is a perfect example of what I dislike about modern popular music.
I find Beyonce’s version virtually unlistenable, whereas this reading of the song is very compelling. The tempo is slowed down and the musical accompaniment quiet enough to actually understand the lyrics. The music is full of imperfections. But Leila, the young woman singing and playing, is talented and charming and adorable. Beyonce Knowles is like Superwoman, but if I had to choose which one I’d like to spend time with, I’m going with Leila.

While we’re at it, let’s add one more video of a young Tom Jones singing “It’s Not Unusual”. Two things strike me about this performance. First, the performance is obviously live, with the microphone clearly pucking up his handclaps and snapping fingers. Second, he’s so muscular, with the classic “V” shape of a bodybuilder. No wonder the girls went wild for Tom:

Tom’s strong voice has served him well as he aged, and these two blues collaborations with Jeff Beck are very enjoyable.
